last updated: 07 March 2020 written by: Sebastian Petrosi

Everyone likes free stuff.

And there is no exceptions when it comes to VPN services. Hundreds of thousands of people search for a free VPN every month. Depending on the choice you make, this can be either a very bad idea or a very good one.

I am not going to lie to you, unreliable free VPN services have been involved in making money off their users through various ways. So you need to be very careful when you are choosing a free VPN.

If you search the term “best free vpn” on Google or on any other search engines you will get a lot of results.  For newbie, this can be very overwhelming especially with all the risks involved.

I have listed down the best free VPN that are safe, secure and reliable. But I still emphasize that you should go for a premium VPN whenever possible. My best recommendation is NordVPN you can try their risk free service for 30 days.

Now that we have got that out of the way let’s move to best Free VPN services of 2019

Best Free VPN Services

My criteria for choosing the best free VPN was that the VPN should be secure, reliable, fast and most importantly available on multiple devices. The following are the VPN services that I have tried and tested personally, I am not relying on the opinion of other users. So feel free to disagree with me and present an alternative.

  1. ProtonVPN
  2. Windscribe VPN
  3. Hotspot Shield VPN
  4. Hide.me
  5. Speedify

Note: We suggest to use paid VPN initially with free trial. You can easily get SurfShark 7 day free trial with full features and continue its subscription if you find it valuable.

1. ProtonVPN – Reliable Free VPN with Unlimited Usage and Decent Speeds

ProtonVPN has always been my pick when it comes to free VPN. It’s backed up by ProtonMail which is another fan favorite encrypted email service. It is based in Switzerland so you don’t have to worry about the privacy laws or the company handing over your data to the government. It has unlimited data allowance which means you can enjoy watching sports and shows that are region blocked.

But the downside is that the speed degrades during peak hours and there is no p2p support with the free version. You can’t complain though, free VPN services don’t usually offer as much as ProtonVPN does. You can always upgrade to its premium version for just $4/month. For more information read our ProtonVPN review.

2. Windscribe VPN – Limited Bandwidth but Solid Security

Windscribe is my second best free VPN because it has a cap on bandwidth. But when you compare it with other brands it still gives you whopping bandwidth of 10 GB per month. It also has an extension for Chrome and Firefox, which I just love by the way. I have been using Windscribe’s VPN extension for Firefox for 2 years now and it has never disappointed!

Windscribe has a strict zero logs policy and it is recommended by almost every legit VPN review site. Not only that, you can also choose to sign up to their services using only your username and password. Windscribe take anonymity very seriously.

If you are looking to extend your 10 GB limit then you can ask one of your friends to sign up for Windscribe and get an additional 1 GB on top. If that friend signs up for the pro service then you will get unlimited data and access to all servers for free.

3. Hotspot Shield – Free VPN Veteran

Hotspot Shield is another best free VPN service with a 500MB cap on daily usage limit. It is one of the most popular free VPNs for Windows and PC to use as free.

You cannot expect a brilliant performance in terms of speed, but it surely can help you to done your work.

Due to the limited bandwidth, you would not consider it to be the best free VPN for torrenting, but it sure does protect your privacy.

4. Hide.me – Good Speeds and Data Allowance

Like all the other best free VPN services, Hide.me too offer paid and free services. However, in the free service 2GB is your monthly data cap.

The free service has three server locations and one device limit for the usage. But, Hide.me is pretty good when it comes to the protection of your privacy.

It is also compatible with various devices running popular platforms like Windows, Android, iOS, and Mac OSX.

5. Speedify – Good Speeds with Strong Encryption

It is another good free VPN service which is mainly aimed at providing decent speed while protecting users’ privacy and giving them the taste of true internet freedom.

Speedify has the feature to automatically combine your internet connections, Wi-Fi or 4G, for better speed.

Even if you do not have a 4G connection, they still claim to speed your connection up with their turbocharging technology.

Speedify makes all of its servers available for free users which are normally available for the paid users, but the Free users only get 4GB of data in the first month and becomes 1GB data limit for the next months.

How to Select best Free VPN for yourself

The best VPN varies on your needs. Other websites claim that they know the “best VPN” but at the end of the day “best free VPN” is the one that works for you.

We can however, share a criteria on which you can decide which free VPN is the best for you.

  1. Check its jurisdiction, its best if it doesn’t fall in to the 5, 9, 14 eyes category.
  2. See if it’s compatible with other devices.
  3. Read its logging policies.
  4. Check their bandwidth cap. The more the better.
  5. Check its features of both pro and the free version.
  6. Try them out yourself and see if it works for you.

The free VPN services that we have listed in this guide have gone through the check list above. We did all the work for you. If you still have any questions then ask us in the comments section.

Which is the Best Free VPN?

Like I have already mentioned, best varies on your needs. But if I were to choose an overall I would definitely go for ProtonVPN.

It doesn’t have any data cap and has strong security protocols. They are also backed up by fan favorite ProtonMail.

Alternatively, you can also go for Windsribe. It has an awesome Chrome extension which encrypts your browser session with one click.

Its app is also very intuitive, just a tap on the button and it will connect you to the fastest server available.

In Conclusion

Free stuff is awesome. We all love it.

But there is always some price to pay. There were a lot of free VPN services like Hola VPN, Go VPN and Opera VPN that sell your data to advertisers for money. There were others that had the problem of data leaks.

In this article I have only highlighted the ones that I have tried and personally used. I hope that this helped you in picking the best free VPN. If you think I missed out on a service or if you have something to say then do sound off in the comments below.
